Traffic Calming for Muker
Reeth Rural Council discussed the danger of motor cars coming through Muker. ... The Automobile Club were sending a motor danger post ... for erection at Muker at the extremity of the county road. ... another was required at the other end of the village, so that the school might be between the two ... Mr Guy said a danger post was really more necessary at the west end of the village than at the east, as from the east cars were longer in sight and coming over the bridge , so that children had more warning. There was nowhere but the road for the children to come out on, as the school had no playground or yard.

Electricity Supply Charges 'Unfair'
Charges quoted by the North Eastern Electricity Board for providing supplies to the rural areas in Arkengarthdale in the Reeth district of Swaledale, were described as “fantastic and unfair” by a resident at a public meeting in the School House, Arkengarthdale, last night, when the Board’s scheme for the area was discussed. ...Hamlets of 10 or more properties close together did not have to make a contribution to the cost of an installation, but residents of isolated properties would have to pay, objection was made to the eight properties known as Eskeleth being charged a figure of £567 for a supply. ... It was contended that these properties could have been taken in with the supply to the hamlet of C.B.Yard where no contribution was called for. .. .The same thing applied to the School House area of some 12 properties for which a figure of about £1,300 had been quoted. The residents in this are would also lose their present supply provided by a local resident’s generator, and would be faced with paying for a supply from the Board or do without electricity.

Fertile Secret of Muker
On Sunday amidst a crowd of spectators were christened by the Rev Lister Metcalfe, in the parochial chapel of Muker, Swaledale, near Askrigg, in this County, two girls and a boy, at one birth, the tender offspring of Christopher and Margaret Peacock, whose united ages made 105 years, viz Christopher aged 60, and Margaret 45; and what is remarkable, she has two brothers and two sisters now living who had twins each; the children are extremely healthy, and the most promising to do well. How Prolific is the air of Muker! |
