Wife Absconds

Whereas MARTHA Wife of me WILLIAM PEARSON of White-Side near Reeth in Swale-Dale, left my House about Six weeks ago, and took with her a little Boy, my Son, about Ten years of Age. She was accompanied by George Harker, Jobber in Cattle, with whom there is every reason to believe that she has since resided.

Hay Outrage

At the Richmond County Court on Saturday, John Henry Alderson and Isabella his sister, were both charged with committing an assault upon Acting Sergeant Ingleson of Reeth in Swaledale, and also with stealing a quantity of hay, the property of Simon Cherry of Fremington. Both prisoners stoutly denied the assault and theft. They were both committed to gaol for one month with hard labour for the theft and three months with hard labour for the assault.

Cow Saves Life in Swaledale

John Jackson, farmer of Redmire and his farm man took some cows to Reeth Market to sell. They sold them all but one and were bringing the unsold one home over the moor when they were caught by an awful snow storm & blizzard. John Jackson was lost but the cow brought the men safely home. He [Jackson] clung to the cow’s tail all the way and arrived safe and exhausted. John Jackson was found dead some days after in a snowdrift.
